What’s Cooking Up at St. James’ Church?
Shore House has been cooking their own meals for the past two months. There are currently one staff member and three members who meal plan and prepare these meals.
Carol C.: The kitchen is great. I made a lot of food and I am proud to be a part of cooking for Shore House. I made delicious tacos and chili. Great job to the staff and members! I also go shopping and plan the menu with Susan. I like to prepare and help cook the food. I am great and it’s good to go out and do things like this for the program.
Susan M: Poor preventative health is an epidemic among those living with mental illness resulting in a 25 year short life span than their peers. All of our members live on a fixed income and due to cost, access to healthy fresh food is often not an option. By providing this meal, many time we are providing the only nutritious meal of their day. In addition to the cooking lunch, during the summer, we will begin our “Cook and Carry” program. This program will show our members how to cook a week’s worth of healthy meals while on a budget.
I have really enjoyed cooking at St. James. The entire process, from menu planning, to shopping, to the end product is satisfying and we are filled with a sense of accomplishment. I am constantly amazed at the tasty and nutritious meals we are able to make.
